CUD’s mission is to promote progressive perspectives in learning, research, and application. This is nurtured from the appreciation and respect for the diverse culture and values in the UAE.Canadian University Dubai has always been an attraction for new students and is proudly home to 127 nationalities.  As claimed by the CUD website, there is a wide selection of cultural events held throughout the year. Most of these events consist of Global Day, Arts Nights, cultural festivals from across the globe, entertaining events such as Halloween parties and national day celebrations. The events at CUD play a vital role in constituting their own cultures where students commemorate the diversity of their country through fashion, food, art, music, and dance performances. The Office of Student Affairs at the university also organizes plenty of events where they raise awareness on issues found worldwide or in the community such as Breast Cancer Awareness and Autism Awareness.

With this in mind, CUD Reads was established as a means to promote reading amongst the CUD community members while engaging them in interactive programs such as debates, scavenger hunts, discussion groups, lectures and competitions. CUD Reads chooses a book for the year and then centers all the games and activities around the chosen book. The books chosen work on a three-year cycle with choices that represent three categories of authors, which are; global, Middle Eastern and Canadian. CUD Reads aims to celebrate international and regional authors while exploring memorable and thought-provoking literature. The book selection for the first three-year cycle of CUD Reads is as following;

With the aim to further inspire and initiate students to step outside the box, Canadian University Dubai launched their reading initiative, CUD Reads, in 2019. The reading initiative was developed and executed by Dr. Ode Amaize, Professor and Head of Department of Communication and Media.  As readership amongst the youth declines over the years due to the rapid growth in digital entertainment, CUD Reads aims to promote the importance of literature and reading. In recent years, less than 20 percent of teenagers and young adults have read a book, magazine, or newspaper for pleasure. More studies show that twelfth graders that have not read a book for pleasure have tripled since 2016 (Twenge, 2018). The popular pass-time of reading for previous generations has now been replaced with daily use of social media. This trend does not predict an easy transition for young adults attending or planning to attend college. Reading not only calms down and helps with relaxation but it is a tool for new knowledge and enlightenment. More so, reading enhances cognitive skills, vocabulary, comprehension skills, critical thinking, memory and confidence (Young Readers Foundation, n.d).
