Course and Campaign Description
The Media Impact (MCM-220) course studies the models and theories of media psychological effects. Such models and theories include: the bullet theory, selective effects models, knowledge gap models, empathy models, consumerism models, as well as framing and agenda setting models. The course puts emphasis on the uses and gratification models and embeds it into practice in order to enable students to comprehend the concept and practice of media psychology in different contexts.
The debate is a non-profit activity initiated within Canadian University Dubai by the Media Impact class (MCM-220 during the Summer 1 semester 2018/2019), that is made up by 21 communication students divided into five groups.
The debate group will discuss about whether social media are responsible for mental health issues and to what extent, the research group will gather researches conducted in the past years about the relationship between social media and mental health awareness.
The situation analysis group will analyze the campaign considering the internal and external factors of it, while the branding group will promote the debate through the creation of posters, brochures, logos,...
Finally, the event management and planning group will take care of the organization of the event. (Appendix 1)
Through this campaign, we aim to spread awareness about the media impact and to what extent social media affects mental health disorders among young adults; this is why we are mainly targeting students in the United Arab Emirates.
